IPAD 3: Do I really need one?

While I have just about every device that Apple has offered, I have moved away from some of the devices in the last year or so.

My last version of the iPhone was a the 4G from Apple.  I was so sick of the dropped calls a couple of years back that I switched to Sprint just because the Evo could actually make calls. Then I upgraded to the Galaxy S2.  My wife went from her iPhone 4G to the Galaxy S2 on the Sprint network as well, mostly because she wanted to share batteries with me.  Over time her iPhone just would not charge as well. She was also no longer sold on data from AT&T, as there is just too much to lose with the data caps.

I bought the original iPad within a few weeks of it coming out. I got the one with 64 gigs and the AT&T data connection. We signed up for the data and kept it active for about a year. Soon it became obvious that we only used it at home. Finally we just cut off the data, and we activate it only in months we are going out of town. It works fine like that. That iPad is really in the hands of my six and eight year old sons mostly.  About 99% of the time. We so rarely use it that it is now laughable.

I bought it originally thinking that I could use it on the road as a replacement for carrying a laptop at times.  It failed immediately at that as there is so much it cannot do. I went on to buy a Macbook Air 13 inch about a year ago, and that has suited me well ever since. It is so much easier to carry and use on the road when compared to the bigger laptops of the past.

I did make the mistake of buying the Android Kindle. Even my sons don’t like it.  It is so much of a substandard device when one compares it even to the iPad one.  While it is a great integration of their Amazon store, that is really not an advantage if you want to move around the Android world.  Most of the apps that work on the Kindle are not really good on the Android phones, like the Galaxy S2.  Not a fan. Will probably wipe it clean and drop it on Ebay. My sons don’t even want it.

The iPad 3 will be an immediate purchase if it is the size of a Kindle for me.  If it has the Verizon 4G LTE network on it – and it lets me buy it on and off as with my iPad one and AT& T, I will likely buy it.  I already am paying Verizon for my MIFI LTE device, so I really don’t want yet another data bill from Verizon if it is on a contract.

It is not about features at this point with the iPad. We all know the features.  And I really do not consider “SIRI” to be a feature.  SIRI will not make me want to buy it, as i would never use it. Android has something similar and I just don’t like it. Even if it understood every word I said and talked to me when I was lonely and in need of electronic companionship.

We skipped iPad 2, grabbing the cheap Kindle Fire.  I would say I really do not need it, therefore we will likely wait until the lines go away and buy one about three weeks after it hits stores.

Do we need it? No. Do we want it? Yes.  My sons want it bad.  In fact, they want one each. That’s not going to happen.  Well, maybe not.

Stock Madness STBV: Strategic Global Investments – A Look at the Company and the Opportunity

Dear Members,

We will be speaking a lot about Strategic Global Investments over the coming weeks and months. Please take a close look this morning. You will notice it trades lightly, but there is a reason I have taken this one on.   It is not because we expect huge trading as of day one. It is because there is a huge value story here. Of course, this is from my perception on the company, and you do need to take a look at it all yourself. I will have details on the value story as I see it.

I think shares are cheap at current levels – however – the liquidity is not yet there.  That means that those that get in early will have to wait for great liquidity.  The flip-side of the coin here is that the limited volume can lead to more substantial gains.

Keep a close eye this morning, and particularly in this first week. The sign I am going to look for is volume kicking several times over, with an increase in price. When that first happens (and it good be sooner, or it could take a few days), to me that will be a sign this is ready to take off.
